Slavery, resistance and freedom Story 9 of 18
The Abolition of Slavery: July 1, 1863
On July 1, 1863, slavery was abolished in the Dutch colonies, including Curaçao. Thousands of enslaved people were legally granted their freedom. On Curaçao, this day is known as Dia di Emansipashon, or Emancipation Day.
However, the abolition of slavery did not immediately end the consequences of slavery. Many formerly enslaved people continued to face poverty, inequality, and discrimination. Today, we commemorate this important date to honor our ancestors, acknowledge their suffering, and celebrate freedom, dignity, and equality.
