The first inhabitants Story 2 of 18
Indigenous Ceramic Communities of Curaçao
Around 1,500 years ago, Indigenous groups who used pottery reached Curaçao from South America, particularly from the region of present-day Venezuela. They made pots and other clay objects to store water and food. They lived in places that included coastal areas and locations near water sources, where they could fish, gather shellfish and find other food. They also maintained contact with communities on other islands and the mainland.
Over time, larger settlements developed. Pottery fragments, tools and traces of dwellings provide archaeologists with information about their daily lives and culture.
