Giovanni Abath was born on January 23, 1974, in Curaçao. He grew up in Bandabou, where he showed creativity and an interest in making things from an early age.

Today, he is known as Giovanni Abath 7.1, a self-taught Curaçaoan artist and sculptor. Being self-taught means that he developed much of his artistic knowledge and skills independently, without following a formal art education. His artistic name, 7.1, is a numerical representation of his initials, G.A.

From Metalworker to Artist

During an important part of his life, Giovanni worked in industry, including at the oil refinery. His experience with metal helped him discover new ways to transform ordinary materials into creative objects and works of art.

He began by making carnival creations, decorations and various objects. Over time, he developed his skills and became a visual artist with his own distinctive style.

He works with iron, stainless steel, wood and other reused materials. Even when some people did not immediately appreciate his work, Giovanni continued experimenting and developing his ideas.

Art That Tells the Story of Curaçao

For Giovanni, metal is more than just a material. It is a way to express ideas about Curaçao, its history, identity, freedom, unity and human development.

One of his well-known works is History in Motion, created in 2018 at the request of the Curaçao government for Flag Day celebrations.

The artwork consists of eight metal sections surrounding the flagpole at Brionplein. The different shields represent aspects of Curaçao’s history and development. Through this work, Giovanni brings art and history together and encourages people to reflect on the story of their island.

Landhuis Morgenster and the 7.1 Experience

Another important chapter in Giovanni’s journey was the restoration of Landhuis Morgenster. Together with his wife, Angelica, he helped transform this historic plantation house into a place where art, culture and Curaçao’s history come together.

In September 2023, they opened the 7.1 Experience. Visitors can explore his sculptures and learn more about his artistic vision, ideas and creative process.

From Curaçao to the International Art World

Giovanni’s artworks can be found in several locations across Curaçao, including Brionplein, Blue Bay and Landhuis Morgenster.

In 2026, his work gained international attention when his sculpture The Colors Behind the Flowers was selected for the Royal Caribbean Artist Discovery Program and placed aboard Legend of the Seas.
